Colab represented artist, Tomokazu Matsuyama to create the
Artist in Residence collection for LeSportsac as they celebrated their 35th anniversary year.
For LeSportsac’s Artist in Residence series, Matsuyama created three original print concepts based on his paintings - Paint Splash, Gingham and Numbers.
“Paint Splash” and “Gingham” designs were created by appropriating textile patterns which appear in “Ukiyo-e” or “pictures of the floating world”
woodblock prints from the late 18th century of Japan. Said Matsuyama "The use of numbers in my artwork originated from the Buddhist philosophy of Reincarnation...
In order to approach these complex ideas and perhaps draw the cultures together, the feel of the design tries to be accessible and approach pop elements –
all orchestrated by contemporary typography in the use of numbers."
